A burial ground, site of historic buildings
and managed woodland. This is London's most famous working graveyard
-- resting place of actors, poets and politicians -- and a memorial to
Victorian gothic flamboyance.
Features include bizarre Victorian buildings,
Colonnade, Chapels, Catacombs, Lebanon Circle and Egyptian Avenue, all
of outstanding architectural importance. The newer cemetery (east
side), the final resting place of Karl Marx, is brimful of jumbled and
overgrown graves. The old cemetery is a romantic wilderness of tombs,
mausoleums and catacombs; guided tours only.
The cemetery is closed during funerals.

by permit, £2), or children under 8 in west side.

Eine Beerdigungsstaette, historische
Gebaeude und bewirtschafter Wald... Es ist London's beruehmtester
Friedhof. - Ruheplatz von Schauspielern, Poeten und Politikern - ein
Denkmal viktorianischer Gothik.
Die Besonderheiten des Friedhofes sind
bizarre viktorianische Gebaeude, Wandelgaenge, Kappellen, Katakomben,
Lebanon Circle und Egyptian Avenue, alle von herausragender archiketonischer
Bedeutung. Der neuere Teil des Friedhofes (Ostseite), die letzte Ruhestaette
von Karl Marx, ist voll von durcheinander und zugewachsenen Graebern.
Der alte Teil des Frieshofes ist gepraegt von einer romantischen Verwilderung
aus Grabmaehlern, Mausoleen und Katakomben; nur Fuehrungen.
Der Friedhof ist geschlossen waehrend
Beerdigungen. Bitte rufen Sie an vor Ihrem Besuch. Keine Videokameras
oder Fotoapperate erlaubt (Fotografieren mit Erlaubnisschein, £2), oder
Kinder unter 8 Jahre in der Westseite.
