‘New York City’s very pretty in the night-time, but oh don’t you miss Soho...?’ sang once-celebrated short-lived guitar band the Libertines on their first album, Up the Bracket. Amongst all of London’s many diverse boroughs and districts, Soho is surely one of the most infamous, a mixture of members-only clubs, gay bars, wonderful local restaurants, Chinatown, brothels... No wonder it attracts the creative type. London, not just Soho, has always been a source of inspiration for some of the country’s greatest artists, from William Blake and Thomas de Quincy to Stanley Kubrick to The Clash.
Why not allow yourself a little rock’n’roll weekend in London town, courtesy of lastminute.com? You don’t need to busk for your lodging or squat in Brixton: go online and find some great London hotels on offer. You can wander along to the Columbia Hotel on Columbia Road (also catching the area’s flower market) in Hoxton, site of many a rockstar indulgence... Or try to blag your way into the ultra-exclusive Soho House for posh cocktails and a glimpse of a few well-coiffed celebrities.
But you don’t need to blow all your money in one go to get a taste of punk London. You could spend a weekend and more with the back catalogue of The Clash as your guide. 1979’s London Calling remains one of the most celebrated punk records ever made, with its iconic black and white cover and Elvis-inspired typography. Why not adventure to the spots which inspired Guns of Brixton, White Man in Hammersmith Palais? Even better, wander the Thames whilst listening to the battle-cry of London Calling’s title track, ‘I live by the river!’ (though don’t do Joe Strummer’s wolf-howls out loud, perhaps...).
Use your hotel as base from which to explore. As you would expect from one of the busiest capitals in the world, there are plenty of cheap
hotels in London, catering for every taste, from the family break to the bachelor party. In the true spirit of bands like The Clash, The Jam or even the Sex Pistols, you shouldn’t have to pay to have a good time: London proves this. Just walking the streets (with a bit of attitude and good pair of trousers) is enough to make it a trip to remember, as every section of the city offers something, and someone, new and intriguing. As The Jam sang rather wryly, ‘That’s entertainment...’
